Ageless, Timeless: The Legs Have It
Fall 2007 Fashion Trends
The sizzling days of summer are slipping by as the subtle essence of fall awaits its entrance onto the fashion scene. Stores’ shelves and racks will soon be donning the latest legwear styles which clearly represent another impressive year for classic fashion. “The trend towards skirts and dresses is making legwear fall’s must-have accessory,” says Alison Hessert of Kayser-Roth Corporation. This season’s directional trends speak to those that were prevalent during the 1920’s, 50’s 60’s and 80’s. Dark, neutral colors are primarily used in simple designs. Vintage styles with a modern twist will be wide-spread; for instance, frills and ruffles inspired from the roaring 20’s offer a most striking effect on dresses and skirts. Chunky sweater-knit tights and legwarmers coupled with a pencil skirt reminiscent of the 50’s are among the top trend-setters. “Suede is the smart neutral for both leg and arm warmers,” comments Kim Smith of Acme-McCrary Corporation. “The look is simple yet charming as well as brainy but off beat.” The use of graphic shapes and patterns closely mirror those of the 1960s and metallic colors popular in the 1980s will also re-emerge. Bronze, black gold, and pewter off-set the simplicity of the more neutral everyday tones, and when paired with deeper shades of black, the combination creates a dramatic yet not too ostentatious look. Styles that focus on silhouettes and layering have again sparked a surge in designers’ use of fashion legwear in their collections. “Shiny, satin inspired legs give off a sleek, lacquered look that is new and modern.” offers Janet Mistor of Hanesbrands Inc. Textured tights and legwear with distinct and bold patterns have rejuvenated the stereotypical “traditional” pantyhose. The classic black sheer is still frequently used in collections and remains a
staple item to fashion; however, this fall, with the use of metallic tones in addition to bright and dark colors, legwear will be vibrant and rich. “Trend developments in legwear are ongoing,” asserts Sally Kay of The Hosiery Association (THA). “While some styles may be indicative of ages past, modern innovation offers today’s consumer more fashionable legs than ever.”
