At the recent SEAMS Spring Networking Conference, Ex-Officio Officer Jim Lovejoy presented the 2005 SEAMS Person of the Year Award to Dan St. Louis.
Dan is the director of the Hosiery Technology Center of North Carolina at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, NC. He grew the HTC from scratch -- with no room, no equipment, and no staff -- to the present facilities that include two knitting labs, a dyeing lab and testing center, and a full-time staff of 13. With main facilities in Hickory and a satellite office in Asheboro, the HTC offers training at the center, on-demand, in-plant classes, plus research and development, testing, prototyping, and e-commerce for the hosiery/textile industry. Dan has also been working with state agencies and the US Department of Commerce Commercial Service to promote exporting to help the industry remain competitive globally.
Dan was the guiding force in producing the USA Catalog as a joint venture of SEAMS and the Hosiery Technology Center. His help with the layout of the catalog as well as developing the mailing lists was invaluable to the project. Dan’s staff worked with SEAMS to produce our first two Made in USA Catalogs. Dan was instrumental in developing the Testing Consortium, representing retailers, hosiery manufacturers, suppliers, testing labs, and NCSU College of Textiles, which established standard test methods for the hosiery industry. He is currently working with TC2 and sheer manufacturers to develop sizing standards for sheer hosiery products.
Dan and his wife Sandra live in Morganton, NC. They are the parents of three -- Ben, Stephen, and Jennifer -- who are all in college until Ben graduates in June.
