Obituary - Saul Schpack Wojnowich

Charlotte lost one of its finest Wednesday. Saul Schpack Wojnowich, born December 6, 1947, left Cuba for Charlotte, fleeing the Castro regime in the early 1960s. He left with his Holocaust survivor parents, Boris and Bertha Wojnowich, now deceased, and his twin brother Paul and younger brother Leonard. Following graduation from the University of North Carolina and a short stint in the corporate world, Saul and his brother Paul opened what would later become the largest sheer hosiery manufacturer in the region, Highland Mills Incorporated which at one time employed more than 650 Charlotteans.

Saul was an active and philanthropic member of the community supporting organizations ranging from the Jewish Preschool on Sardis to The Juvenile Diabetes and Research Foundation. Referred to many times as a "soft spoken giant of a man,"Saul enjoyed the peaceful pleasures of working in his garden, fishing, collecting stamps and most of all spending time with his family and watching his four grandchildren grow up.

Saul is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Lori; son, Marc Wojnowich of Charlotte, his wife, Kim and two daughters, Zoe (5) and Taylor (2); daughter, Susie Weinberg of Charlotte, her husband, Mark and two children Alex (7) and Karlie (4); brother, Paul Wojnowich of Fort Mill, SC; brother, Leonard Wojnowich of Savannah, GA; aunt and uncle, Mary and Simon Wojnowich of Charlotte.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, March 7, 2008 at Temple Israel located at 5007 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to either, The Juvenile Diabetes and Research Foundation (JDRF), The National Kidney Foundation, The Jewish Preschool on Sardis or Temple Israel. Published in the Charlotte Observer on 3/7/2008.

Tefron Profits Plummet- Unfavorable exchange rates and price reductions in its older intimate apparel product lines impacted margins at Tefron, a leading maker of seamless intimate apparel. Full year 2007 revenues at the Israeli company were $158.6 million, a 15.7% decrease. The decline in revenue was primarily due to a reduction in sales of active-wear products, primarily to Nike, reduced sales of intimate apparel, mainly to Victoria's Secret for older Cut & Sew collections, and a slight decline in sales of swimwear, said the company. Operating income for the year was $1.8M compared with $25.9M. in 2006. Net income was $483,000 versus $18.4M previously.
