HISTORICAL HOSIERY HAPPENING: August 2000 – Back to Cool – Kids will be sporting trendy socks in school this fall – When it comes to socks, kids won't settle for the basics anymore. In fact, anything goes: pony skin prints, electric-bright colors and luxurious textures are the order of the day.

Kids' socks are taking their cues from junior trends, report industry experts. “Children are developing at an increasingly young age their own sense of style, not to mention the fact that they can be pretty vocal about what they like to wear,” points out Sally Kay, vice president and secretary of THA. “From a parent's point of view, though, I believe that there is some relief in choosing the sock. Whether it's the color, style, texture, pattern or even character motif, the choices available in kids' socks never cease to amaze me.”

Just as junior socks are a riot of animal prints, so too are kids' socks this season. Zebra, tiger, leopard, cow and pony prints are expected to be favorites. Color abounds this season and there's something for everyone. Bright jewel tones will be impossible to miss – watch for a lot of purples, fuchsias, bright yellows, sapphire blues, sparkling turquoise and zinnia pinks. For an earthier look, many companies are offering loden green. For a sportier look, heathered grays and blues will be on the scene.

EU, Chinese Officials to Meet on Textile Quotas: The European Union (EU) will meet internally and with Chinese officials this week in an effort to subdue the emotions that have accompanied the filling of several of the safeguard quotas Brussels imposed on Beijing earlier this year.  According to The Financial Times, the unexpected embargoes have left millions of garments stranded, which retailers say threatens their ability to supply consumer demand this fall and winter. The EU may be considering several possible actions to address the situation, including borrowing from the 2006 quotas, although Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson recently indicated that a specific decision may not come until early September. Subsequently, a separate Financial Times article noted that some Chinese manufacturers have shifted operations to other Asian countries whose exports to the EU are not restricted.

Madagascar Joins Southern African Development Community:  Reuters reported that Madagascar became the 14th member of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) last week.  This change is a development that local businessmen believe will improve their island nation's economic prospects. The article noted that SADC membership will remove high import duties that have prevented Madagascar , one of Africa's biggest exporters of textile products to the US under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), from expanding such exports to its neighboring countries.
